While reading recent blogs of friends who have shared their love stories, I was inspired to share ours.
On March 21, 1997, I was 17 years old and a dancer in our school's musical. I had recently ended a crushing relationship where the boy had cheated on me and found no remorse. Although I knew he wasn't right for me, it was still a blow to the heart and self-esteem. My friend, Amy, was dating a boy from a nearby high school - one known for having all the "cute" boys. Surely her boyfriend had some single friends who might be interested in a date. She immediately thought of one in particular that she believed to be perfect for me, but he was currently seeing someone. The conversation ended with no leads, but that was okay. Maybe I needed some time alone.
It was the second night of our performance and it was the best show we'd had - even in rehearsals. The entire cast was jumping off the walls and we were going nuts with excitement. Afterwards, I saw Amy's boyfriend, Nick who said "Hey Jess! Good job tonight. Meet my friend, Will." I was clearly not interested in stopping for a chat, so I just said "Thanks, Nick! Hi, Will." and then I moved on to celebrate our great show. I don't even think I shook his hand. While greeting friends, several of them said, "Oh you just HAVE to meet this guy. He wants to meet you." They pointed to Nick's friend, Will, and I suddenly realized what was going on. They were trying to set me up! Being only 17 and known for doing the exact opposite of what I am told (I still have that trait), I immediately said "WhatEVER, no way!" The rest of the night, my friends tried to get the two of us together to talk. I was so nervous because I now knew what was going on and I didn't want to make a fool out of myself. I avoided him at ALL costs. He accompanied us to several afterparties (driving himself alone, I might add - I still feel bad about that!), and finally at the last one, we got cornered in the kitchen. We engaged in the most awkward conversation you've ever heard, even reciting a couple lines from the movie Tommy Boy. Yeah, it was bad. Will decided that I just wasn't interested so he announced to Nick that he was going home. I heard that and said "NO! You can't go." Imagine Will's surprise when he heard that from the girl who had totally ignored him the whole night. He insisted that it was time to go, so I helped give him directions. When he left, I found out that he wasn't just anybody...he was THE friend Amy had mentioned earlier as being perfect for me. He was now single! Nick then filled me in on how he was "THE" Will Alley at Freeman High School - great athlete, friend to everyone, son of a preacher, quality guy. I learned later that girls at several high schools nearby knew of him! I quickly told Nick to pass along my number and apologize for how I acted.
He called a few days later and we had the best conversation. We laughed about the same things and had similar interests. We had a half-day at school the next Friday, so his friends and mine met up at Pizza Hut for lunch. He sat next to me, my heart pounded. He was so cute. He had on a polo shirt with plaid shorts. He was simply adorable. I noticed he had freckles on his arm. I did too. He wore his hat backwards. That was cute. Our first official date was that night, March 28, 1997. We went on a group date to an Easter Cantata and to a soccer game. The entire night, we joked and laughed repeatedly. It was as if we'd known each other forever. The connection was unmistakable. That was for sure.
It was perfect. Maybe too perfect? I wanted to say that he might be "the one," but I was in high school and felt too young to make that kind of declaration. I also suffered from doubt. Surely this seemingly perfect person couldn't be interested in me. In ME? I wasn't good enough. I was too flawed, too inferior. To my surprise, he called for another date and another date. Five years after our first date, a lot of personal growth, an abundance of transforming learning experiences, and many fun and memorable times, we were married on April 13, 2002. It was magical. We were so in love and ready for the next phase of our life. As we approach our 5 year anniversary and 10 years of being together, I wish my husband a (belated) Happy Valentine's Day. I love our life in Texas, our precious daughter, our marriage, our faith, our home, our calling to ministry, and all that will come in our future. You are my best friend, my buddy, my love, and my hero. I love you "bigger than the world."
